The filming instructions and being wired made him feel like he was about to go on a convert mission, not begin a singing contest. Sending his demo was an act of support for the station. Growing up with the radio, he wanted to support it. In the ever-evolving media world, he feared radio as he knew it would become obsolete. But never in his wildest dreams did he think he would be chosen. As he read the waiver to protect the station against a lawsuit for any harm that might come to him, physical or emotional, he wondered how poor the pool of contestants must have been for him to be selected.

As if reading his mind, a producer said to him in a matter-of-fact voice as he signed the waiver, “You should be proud of yourself. In a sea of gifted entrants, your voice moved us the most with your ability to hold a tune.”

He feared his losing streak would prevent him from winning. His public meetings and speeches about urban design gave him the confidence to be filmed. But singing in public was another matter. The only person who had ever heard him sing was his mother. He refused to sing in front of company. Singing was his therapy. Now, he would have to sing in front of strangers—the thousands of people who watched and listened. It was a harrowing thought that it would be so public, but he could not walk away from the opportunity. He was standing in a buzz of attention and excitement, and he could not let them down.

Another producer blindfolded him and escorted him into a vehicle that began to wind down a snaking road against the cliff toward the quaint but active town.
